finally allowed back home in san bruno three days after the massive explosion and fire killed four neighborses and seriously injured a dozen more. investigators still don't know what caused the gas line to explode as the search for clues continues. the california public utility commission is ordering pg&e to inspect all 5,000 miles of the gas line statewide. they are calling on the utility to change procedure for responding to gas leaks and preserve all records for its work on the line that goes through san bruno.

pge crews are working to -- pg&e crews are working to restore power. lilian kim is live in san bruno with their home coming. lilian? >> beverly mandell's home was initially yellow taged which means she could only go home to retrieve her belongings. inside there are remanence of the pipeline explosion. >> i'm probably gonna have to have a new ceiling or something. that's also got holes in it. >> i expected to be in tears, but i wasn't. i am lucky this house is still standing here. >> dozens of other san bruno residents went back home for the first time since flames tore through their neighborhood. >> i am just so happy. >> she had no idea what she would find upon returning home.

she and her family live within a half block of where the pipeline exploded. their house was for the most part as they left. it it was green taged meaning they could return. >> everything is in shambles and everything here broken. that's what i was expecting. so i was totally surprised when i saw it is like nothing happened. >> like most families whose homes are green taged, their day was busy cleaning up the food spoiled in the refrigerators. pg&e went door-to-door making sure everyone's gas was turned back on. they say it has been a bittersweet day. while they are thankful for their home was not damaged, their heart goes out to their neighbors. >> they have come to see everything is normal in the sense of our home, but some of our dearest friends are right down the hill, and their homes are completely destroyed. >> hopefully we can, during

this time, do what we can to help get them back on their feet. it is a time to pull together. >> after residents have red taged home, there will be a meeting at 1555 crystal springs road. that's the san bruno senior center. lilian kim, abc7 news. >> thank you, lilian. late today, san bruno officials announced two of six people previously reported missing have been located. that leaves four unaccounted for. relatives say three members of the bullis family are all missing. a fourth person is also unaccounted for, but they have not publicly identified that person. investigators know natural gas explosion caused these homes to burn down. now they are trying to determine why that line ruptured. the national transportation safety board began shipping some of the evidence back to

washington, d.c. for analysis. alan wang has more of the efforts to find out how this happened. alan? >> carolyn, behind me is the police command center and pg&e crews are working around the clock to fix the pipeline. the national transportation safety board investigates the movement vessels and material. the natural gas is the material. in the dayses ahead we will hear more about line 132, the gas line that blew up. and today we were given a peek in the investigation. ntsb investigators are turning their attention to the anatomy of the explosion. the pipe was carefully removed today. the answers could lie in the torn metal at ground zero measuring half the length of a football field. >> we don't know at this point whether there was a well

failure, impact from previous construction. >> but investigators are very interested in hearing from people who can tell them when and where they smelled gas prior to the explosion. >> have we been able to confirm rumors claiming people smelled gas and then calling it in? no, we have not been able to do that yet. >> pg&e says it has no reports of a gas leak since the beginning of the month. >> when i smelled it, it was once in awhile say three, almost four weeks ago. >> they want to look at amateur video, and they would like to know about the area around line 132 before it exploded. >> one of the symptom of the gas leak is vegetation dies. we had reports of dead vegetation, and we would like to hear about that. >> jesse says the american hawthorne tree that once stood

across from the blown pipeline was ailing. >> it is odd this time of year the tree is wilting. it should be changing color. it should really have red berries. >> investigatorses are also looking into the recent repair of a sewage pipe that ran next to line 132. >> that will be one of the things we will look at in terms of the insulation and maintenance and repair of the sewer pipe since it is in the vicinity of the gas pipe. >> each tidbit will put together the picture of how this was the worst natural gas line disaster in pg&e's 105-year history. but the ntsb says they need to hear it from you. you can send your account of the explosion or your amateur video to san bruno at ntsb.gov. with this information they hope to put together a preliminary, factual report within the next 30 days.

reporting live in san bruno, alan wang, abc7 news. >> all right, alan. pg&e says the pipe that rupture i had was -- ruptured was considered a high consequence area with more stringent inspections. it was installed in 1956 and last checked for leaks in are ma of. the company said today no leaks were found at that time. in 2009, pg&e listed an 8-mile section between livermore and paw noel as the highest -- pinole as a high risk area. an area north of the explosion was checked for leaks and none was found. san bruno families devastated by thursday's gas line explosion shopped for free at old navy this morning. the store held a private shopping event for families whose homes were lost or damaged. the red cross identified at least 100 families and gave them at least a $250 gift card to spend. charlie gray's home and rv was in the path of the fireball.
